Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
